About Kevin

Soil Science Backed by Real-World Agricultural Experience

Kevin Cool is the founder of Cool Soil Consulting, LLC and an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist (IRSS #156) based in Fountain City, Indiana.

Kevin's background in agriculture started long before Cool Soil Consulting. He grew up in Henry County, Indiana, working on family farms and competing in FFA soils judging, where he won at the state level and qualified for the National FFA soils contest.

After earning a degree in Agricultural Systems Management from Purdue University, Kevin worked in agricultural sales and the seed industry before moving into agricultural lending. He spent nearly a decade as an ag loan officer, working directly with farm operations on financial analysis, cash-flow planning, credit, and long-term business decisions.

Kevin also spent years farming himself, giving him firsthand experience with the financial and operational realities behind the decisions farmers make every day.

In 2023, he returned to soils by coaching FFA soils judging. That eventually led him to pursue professional soil science, earn his Indiana Registered Soil Scientist designation, and establish Cool Soil Consulting in late 2025.

Today, Kevin's work combines soil science with an agricultural background that spans farming, agronomy, and farm finance. His experience is particularly rooted in the soils and landscapes of east-central Indiana, including the glacial till soils that dominate much of the region.

Independent by Design

Cool Soil Consulting is an independent consulting firm. We don't sell seed, fertilizer, drainage systems, septic systems, or other products tied to our recommendations.

That separation is intentional. The goal is straightforward: document the soil accurately, explain what it means, and help clients make informed decisions.

The Team

Annie Cool — Office Operations

Annie Cool is Kevin's wife and the first point of contact for many Cool Soil Consulting clients. She assists with scheduling, helps finalize reports, and ensures timely delivery of all consulting documents.

A graduate of Indiana University, Annie works in healthcare HR recruiting and brings strong organizational skills and a professional communication style to every client interaction. When you call the office, there's a good chance you'll hear from Annie first.

Credentials & Expertise

What IRSS #156 Means

The Indiana Registered Soil Scientist designation is a state-issued professional credential — not a marketing title. It requires demonstrated knowledge of soil science, formal education, and passing a professional examination administered by the state of Indiana.

Indiana Registered Soil Scientists are the professionals recognized to conduct on-site soil evaluations for septic system siting in Indiana and to certify those evaluations to county health departments. It is a regulated credential that carries professional accountability on every report Kevin signs.

In agricultural work, the same training applies to a different question. Understanding why soils behave the way they do — the geology, the morphology, the hydrology — adds a layer of physical soil context that complements soil testing, yield history, and agronomic judgment.
